Meet Dr. Theresa E. Darkwa

Dr. Darkwa

Dr. Theresa (Teri) Darkwa is the Coordinator of International Referrals and Consultations at Compassion International Medical Consultants, the international arm of Compassion Medical Wellness Centre. She is qualified as a medical doctor from the College of Medicine University of Lagos in 1989. She obtained an MPH from the School of Public Health, University of Ghana in 2011 and a Membership in Public Health from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2019. She completed her housemanship at the Military Hospital in Accra in 1990. She then applied for and was retained at as a Medical Officer at the Military Hospital.

She has served the Ghana Armed Forces Medical Corps diligently till date. 

She has worked at various satellite clinics in Accra as well as managed the medical services of the 6 Garrison in Tamale comprising of 2 medical establishments which are the equivalent of district hospitals. Teri has also been deployed twice on UN peace support operations.

She has served as the Coordinator House Officer Training since 2012; a role that has expanded to include Doctor of Pharmacy interns and Physician Assistant interns. She was re-appointed officer-in-charge of the Polyclinics at the Military Hospital in Accra in December 2021. A position she previously occupied from 2012 to 2017 until she left for a 2-year course. Upon her return, she worked in the Public Health Division as Officer responsible for protocol and policy formulation.  Never one to shy away from work, Teri initiated a continuous professional development program for the hospital to host Ghana Medical and Dental Council accredited seminars in 2012. 

She is passionate about Medical Ethics and mentoring subordinates. She collaborates often with the Ghana Medical and Dental Council and serves as an examiner for the Council’s Physician Assistant licentiate examination.

Dr. Darkwa is a staunch Christian. Her hobbies include cooking, reading and traveling.

Meet Dr. Anita E Agbeko

Dr. Anita Eseenam Agbeko is a General and Vascular Surgeon, and Palliative care Practitioner at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana. She obtained her Medical Degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana, and completed her General Surgical residency with both the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West African College of Surgeons. She also holds a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery from the International Surgical Training Programme of the Royal College of Surgeons England, having trained in St Mary’s Hospital, London, and the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Dorset County in the UK. Dr. Agbeko also holds a PhD in Palliative Care Medicine from Lancaster University, UK.

Her professional activities include providing patient care, teaching medical and nursing students, and residents. Her research interests are in surgical oncology and vascular surgery, particularly breast cancer and diabetic foot problems. Eseenam is very passionate about providing patient centred care aimed at ensuring quality of life and meeting patients’ goals, characterised by open and continual communication..

As the first and only female General Surgeon who also holds a PhD in palliative care medicine in her hospital, Eseenam has had a unique career development path, and is a pacesetter for other young doctors.  Eseenam desires to impact her community, country and world at large in terms of surgical and palliative care through excellent service, teaching and research. She is therefore open to and continually seeks opportunities that facilitate mentorship, knowledge sharing and transfer, and advocacy. She is interested in partnerships that foster developing equity in surgical care across the world, especially in low resourced settings.

Eseenam speaks English, Ewe and Twi. She lives in Kumasi, Ghana.
